District of Muskoka Household Waste Program

As of spring/summer 2007, the District of Muskoka now provides compost pick up (Green Bin Program) for the urban core of town.  Please visit the District website for more information.

Tips on How to Compost at Home

  • Purchase a Composter

Unfortunately, the Town of Huntsville no longer sells composters, however, one can be purchased at a variety of department stores. .

  • Place in a Convenient Area

Directly on the ground or in the garden.

  • Get a bucket with a really good lid for storing inside.

  • Items to Compost

Coffee grounds, eggshells, banana peels, veggie peels and scraps cut up fine, tea bags, apple cores and peelings, onion skins, etc. Please do not put any dairy, fish, or meat in as this will attract animals!!

  • When the inside bucket is full, take it out and toss it into the composter.

  • Put a "Brown Layer" on Top

The brown layer can be soil, leaves, lawn clippings, manure, pine needles, etc. This stops the awful stench and aids in composting.

  • The Composting Process

The entire process takes about a year.  If the end product is used in gardens, it will help flourish garden flowers

Composting will help eliminate at least one-half bag of garbage from landfill sites while at the same time giving back to the land what it needs.  Begin composting at any time.  Regardless of where you live and how many bears and animals are around, if you compost correctly there should not be a problem.

  • Suggestion

For a household of four, try using two composters so that one can be working while the other is filling up.

Garden Flowers Thank You for The Beautiful New Soil Created!
