Household Tips to Help Protect the Environment

picture of a cartoon earth choking on gases

There are many concrete steps individuals can take to fight climate change.  Here are a few household changes that can be made that will help save energy and money.

  • Weather-proof the house

This will seal in hot air in the winter and cool air in the summer.

  • Replace old light bulbs with compact flourescent bulbs

These last longer and use less energy.

  • Wash clothing in cold water

To save on heating bills and to lower carbon emissions.

  • Turn down the thermostat at night and when away from home (or purchase a programmable thermostat)

  • Install ceiling fans

To cool in summer and help keep the house warm in winter.

  • Switch to low-flow toilets and showerheads to save water.

  • Replace old appliances

Switch refrigerators, washers and dryers with Energy Star appliances.  Appliances older than 10 years are no longer operating at peak capacity.

  • Improve your home's insulation

This will reduce heating costs and carbon emissions.  The most effective place to add extra insulation is in the attic.

  • Switch to a high efficiency furnace

To save on heating costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Sign up for green power

Green power Generated from renewable sources (e.g. wind energy and low-impact water power).  In Ontario, Bullfrog Power provides renewable energy to households and businesses (www.bulfrogpower.com).
