Lifesaving Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid

Candidates will learn rescue techniques, resuscitation skills, leadership skills necessary to perform a water rescue.  Develop fitness skills & efficient strokes to complete a times swim.  Candidates must be 13 years, completed Aquaquest 12 or Red Cross Swim Kids 10.  Strokes required:  front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, whip kick and/or eggbeater. Physical component: 20 lenges in 14 minutes.

Emphasis is placed on the candidates ability to respond to a variety of aquatic emergencies using principles of teamwork & emergency procedures.  Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for NLS.  Candidates must be 14 years of age + Bronze Medallion + Emergency First Aid. Please brings certification cards.

Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross

Re-certification

Every two years participants must re-certify this award in order to stay certified, or take their National Lifeguard Award and keep that current.  Certification expires every two years. Candidates must come to 3-4 classes prior to the exam to get the Instructor evaluated items checked off prior to the examination date.

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course (AWSI)

30-h program (+ 8 h teaching experience) for ages 15 years and up.  This certification course is a prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course.  The course covers the foundation of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback.  Candidates are evaluated during 8 hours of assistant teaching and through study assignments.

Lifesaving Society - National Lifeguard Service (NLS) 40-h program.

A current National Lifeguard Service Award (NLS) is the only recognized lifeguard certification across Canada.  The adoption of the NLS program ensures that all Lifeguards receive training in lifeguard-specific skills, responsiblilities scanning skills, prevention water smart education and First Aid training.  Prerequisite:  16 years of age and Bronze Cross (does not need to be current)

Red Cross & Lifesaving Society Water Safety Instructor course 50-h program

This course further develops instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim continuum:  Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, Lifesaving Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross. The course focuses on how to effectively apply the information learned in the Assistant (Leaders) course.  Other topics include instructional emergency response, skills, stroke development, drills and corrective straegies.  Pre-requistites: 16 years of age + Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor or Leaders, Bronze Cross
