Notice Of Intention To Designate A Property Of Cultural Heritage Value

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE A PROPERTY OF CULTURAL HERITAGE VALUE OR
INTEREST
UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF SECTION 29 PART IV OF THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT,
R.S.O. 1990 AS AMENDED

The Council of the Corporation of the Town of Huntsville intends to designate the following property for reasons of cultural heritage value pursuant to the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, Chapter O.18, Part IV:

Newholm Community Heritage Centre
10 Concession 4 & 5 Road West
Huntsville, ON

The Newholm Community Heritage Centre (former Holy Trinity Church) has design and physical value as a locally rare and representative example of a wooden pioneer church.  It has historical and associative value as there have been two churches at this site. The first church, Trinity Anglican Church, was constructed of logs and stood from 1877 to 1888. This church took on the education of the area children in reading, writing, sums, and religious knowledge; it was also a social center for over 40 pioneer families.  The property has contextual value as the baptismal font is hand-carved by William Morgan, and is reputed to be made up of every type of wood to be found in Muskoka. It was exhibited at the Chicago World Fair in the 1890s.  Morgan was one of the first to be buried in the graveyard.

Any person wishing to file a notice of objection to the designation must file such notice of objection together with a statement of reasons in writing and all relevant facts, by 4:30 p.m. December 4, 2024:

Town of Huntsville
Attention: Tanya Calleja, 37 Main Street East, Huntsville, ON P1H 1A1
